Developing a New Tool for Philanthropic Transformation

Oslo. Manila. Mexico City. One shared mission.

Last week, on June 29, WINGS and ImpactMapper brought together philanthropy practitioners from across the globe for the Philanthropy Transformation Initiative (PTI) Self-Reflection Tool Workshop. The diversity of reflections in the room was as powerful as the agenda itself.

WINGS — a global network of philanthropy associations and support organisations spanning more than 60 countries — commissioned the development of the PTI Self-Reflection tool and partnered with ImpactMapper to build it. The tool grew out of WINGS' Philanthropy Transformation Initiative (PTI), through which the sector collectively defined 10 principles for how philanthropy should evolve to be more equitable, accountable, and effective. The Self-Reflection tool turns those principles into practice: philanthropies and networks can use it to assess how far they've come in applying each principle and to get direct feedback on concrete action steps.

The workshop explored what it means to build a tool for philanthropy that is light-touch, multilingual, and grounded in real-world context. Not another heavy survey. An engaging tool for reflection and action across the philanthropic sector. ImpactMapper brings two things to this process: a software platform purpose-built for capturing and communicating impact and a consulting team coordinating the collaborative design of the tool itself. Together with WINGS, we are ensuring this work is held accountable to the sector it serves. This tool development process is anchored in the same co-creation process that produced the PTI report, drawing from the collective knowledge, lived experience, and critical perspectives of philanthropic practitioners across the globe.

The principles that guide philanthropic transformation do not belong to any one organization or region. They belong to all of us. And the more voices that shape this tool, the more useful it will be for everyone.
